My week in review: Jan. 29-Feb. 4
We are back after making it through the never-ending month that was January. Oof. That month felt like it would never end. But we got through it! It’s been a little bit slower than normal work-wise again as the Wild were on an extended break and the Wolves had four days off randomly. But things are picking up again. Before that happens, however, let’s take a look back at the week that was.
Jan. 29: All over the place
For me, some days are just all over the place. That was the case on this Wednesday. I first was at a meeting for FSN. It was an annual all-staff meeting. I won’t bore you with details since you all probably have meetings you have to attend and won’t add to your plate. But it was reassuring and happy to be part of. Then, it was back to the article grind. That seems to be a lot more prevalent in my life these days and I am here for it.
Jan. 30: From one article to another
This was a quiet Thursday. As I mentioned, the Wild had nine days off because of the All-Star Game and its bye week coinciding. The Wolves also had time off so I maybe wasn’t as busy as normal. Plus, the iHeart work was slowed down because events don’t come as often in January when it’s freezing cold. I don’t blame anyone.
But I did have a highlight covering Eden Prairie boys’ hockey as the Eagles took on the Buffalo Bison. Despite being an EPHS grad, I still think I do a fine job covering EP for the Star Tribune’s High School Hubs. On this night, I covered Jackson Blake as he made his debut on the ice for the Eagles after sitting out because of transfer issues. It was a big issue in the high school hockey world, so it was definitely worth coverage.
Jan. 31: Back with the Wolves
I spent my Friday night editing a Wolves’ pregame show for a team which was on an 11-game losing streak. Yeah me! But we still try to shed some light on what is good. That would be the play of Karl-Anthony Towns and Josh Okogie’s election into the NBA’s Rising Stars Challenge. With the winter sports being a little more limited in work opportunities, I will most definitely take what I can get.
Feb. 1: Parading a Brewery
This particular Saturday, I put my iHeart hat on. I walked in a parade for the first time in my life with KDWB. We walked the St. Paul Winter Carnival’s Torchlight Parade. I was part of the KDWB team. Though many people pour their heart and soul into this, I will say we did not. But it was still fun. You are very popular if you hand out free stuff.
Feb. 2: Super Sunday
It was an off day for me as I got the chance to take in the Super Bowl. I have some thoughts. Here are some of them:
For the game: I didn’t think the Chiefs could dig a hole like they did in previous playoff games and come away victorious. I was oh-so-wrong. Mahomes is amazing. I think Kyle Shanahan is probably getting a little too much heat.
Halftime show: Solid. Both women killed it. I thought Shakira should’ve gone second. I thought she put on the better performance. Liked the inclusion of guys such as J Balvin and Bad Bunny, but I understand the frustration over the lack of Pitbull.
Commercials: I never really have many hot takes about them. I like the Shmat Cah one along with the Lil Nas X/Sam Elliot one. The rest I don’t have strong opinions on.
Feb. 3: Back in the pack
This Monday was a chance for me to put on the FSN hat and head into downtown Minneapolis as I worked on the Wolves-Kings game late on a Monday evening. Though the Timberwolves lost, it ended up being a semi-important game as it was the last before all these crazy trades went down. During the game itself, I was just sending social media post ideas in, which weren’t much on this day. But overall, it will likely go down as a significant one in Timberwolves history. This was the last Wolves game before a massive amount of trades took place to completely reshape the roster.
Feb. 4: Writing and brewing
This Tuesday was a day to write. Working on a few different things, including some stuff for the Colorado Hockey Hub. I will admit, it’s tough to write about high school hockey in Colorado while in Minnesota, but I think I’m slowly getting the hang of it.
That evening, however, I switched gears to a certain extent. I went with my parents to see one of my friends from high school and wife to another friend from high school perform music at the newest brewery in Eden Prairie - Fat Pants Brewery. It was a fun experience watching Miki play. Here’s one of the songs she performed. It’s called “Light A Candle For Me” and it comes from a true place and I think it’s extremely powerful and you should check it out!
Thanks for reading! Hope to be a bit more on time with y’all next week!
